The Danish DJ built his new album from field recordings, local musicians and traditional instruments gathered across ten regions of China.
Danish DJ and producer HEDEGAARD has released KIN, a 10-track album built from years of travel across western China.
The album arrived on June 19 after a string of singles that hinted at its scope. âSay My Name,â a collaboration with dance-pop artist Arash, introduced listeners to the projectâs crossover instincts. âMonolithâ then leaned into cinematic electronic music alongside MOGUAI and Brandon Beal while âControl,â featuring Waka Flocka Flame, carried a darker edge. The result blends EDM with regional storytelling, an approach that has become central to how the DJ describes the ambitious project.
KIN draws on traditional instrumentation, field recordings and collaborations with local musicians gathered during HEDEGAARDâs travels through ten Chinese provinces. A companion documentary series, Western Chinaâs Melody, unfolds across ten episodes, following the artist into the villages and communities that shaped each track. The series aims to give listeners a fuller picture of the collaborations and cultural exchanges behind KIN.
Featuring collaborations with Karen Harding, Curbi and more, the album also includes âMonument,â a single featuring Danish compatriot Jon, whose reworked earlier hit âTurn the Lights Offâ has drawn renewed attention this year. The new version of that track has surpassed 60 million streams on Spotify after the revival of its predecessor, which blew up as the center of the viral on Hamm meme from from the Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors.
